Developing locally relevant, combination vaccines

The Biovac Institute (TBI) is committed to developing and establishing a strong and locally relevant vaccine Research and Development (R&D) capability in South Africa. To that end, the organisation dedicates at least 21% of its pre-tax profits to R&D initiatives.

Our R&D strategy is focused on growing local technical expertise and establishing broad-based vaccine production technology platforms. We are currently developing combination vaccines, mainly for paediatric use, and specifically tailored to the needs of the African market.

Vaccines under development include a liquid pentavalent vaccine (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenza type b.

Combination vaccines are the preferred option as they reduce the number of injections required per child, reduce the associated medical waste and reduce the cold storage space required, which helps minimise distribution costs.

Our current research pipeline includes: The Biovac Institute is always keen to increase its R&D capacity and to develop and manufacture other vaccines in collaboration with university-based and other research groups in South Africa. We are open to collaboration with both local and overseas organisations and scientists on vaccine projects at different stages of development, with specific interest in vaccine projects that are closer to going into clinical trials and are relevant to Africa and other developing countries.
