Manufacturing
Extending our capabilities and reach
The Biovac Institute continues to build on its established foundation, expanding its infrastructure to meet its growing capabilities. The organisation’s head office and central distribution centre are in Johannesburg, while its operational facilities are based in Pinelands, Cape Town. The heart of The Biovac Institute ‘Centre of Excellence’, the Pinelands Campus houses several key functions, including the Research & Development Laboratories, Quality Control laboratories, Vaccine manufacturing facilities for clinical trials and the organisation’s Viewing, Labelling and Packaging facilities.
Key capabilities:
- Vaccine Manufacturing
The Biovac Institute is in the process of building a high volume Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient Production, Formulation and Filling facility.
- Clinical Trials Facility
The Biovac Institute has completed the upgrading of a facility that will manufacture batches for clinical trial purposes. This facility provides capacity for TBI’s internally developed products, as well as for the external community.
- Vaccines Supply Management
The Biovac Institute works closely with the South African government’s Department of Health. A key focus of the Department of Health is attaining the Millennium Development Goal 4 of reducing childhood mortality by two-thirds in 2015. A key element to attaining this goal is through effective immunisation.
The Biovac Institute works closely with the Department in not only consistently supplying Expanded Program on Immunisation(EPI) vaccines, but also assists in responding to vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks by supplying vaccines for mass immunisation campaigns, such as vaccines against polio, measles and influenza. In excess of 200 million doses of vaccines have been sourced and distributed by The Biovac Institute since 2003
- Specialist Cold Chain Distributor
Africa’s harsh terrains and temperatures present African governments and health care providers with unique challenges in maintaining the cold chain of temperature–sensitive products.
In response, The Biovac Institute has developed a cold chain distribution model that overcomes these challenges and consistently delivers vaccines to the clinic or facility where they are needed, not just the nearest depot. This model has already been successfully implemented in the Western Cape Province in South Africa.
